Do kids really “need Halloween costumes”?

There was a girl on TV, who organized a costume drive for little kids who don’t have any, or cannot afford costumes for Halloween. And she said that they "need" them. I don’t see it. It’s not like food. They need food to live. I think that Halloween has been so blown out of proportion. We made our own costumes sometimes when my friends and I were little kids. My cousins were very creative. I really only remember going out for Halloween about 2 times. My parents were really not into that "holiday", and I think they only let us go out because our cousins were going out. And it was much safer than today is. It’s a good thing what the little girl did, but kids really do not "need costumes" IMO.
Tyler, it was a local news story. And it is not a "myth". This is not the same world as it was years ago. My little friends and I did not have to worry about getting raped or kidnapped or killed when we did go out for Halloween. Today kids do. The sickos are out there in record numbers. Now the parties with people that you know are different. And what about kids parents who do not believe in Halloween and ghost and goblins? Should they have to change just because others believe in it?

Kids definantly dont NEED a costume, but I do think they should get one.

I personally love halloween. Its ony of my favs. I couldnt imagine NOT getting my son a costume and NOT taking him out. His school even does a halloween party the school day before halloween, and they get to wear their costumes and do alittle parade around the shoool (he’s in kindergarten). I remember doing the same when I was in Kindergarten. My parents always got me a costume. It may have not been the most expensive.

I do have limits though. I wont spend more than $20 on my son or daughters costume. They have to be covered and warm. and I always buy them alittle bigger and not snug, because my son LOVES to wear his around the house all year round.

So, my answer is, no kids do not NEED a costume, but should get them, or even make them, and get to go out or do something festive for halloween. I think what that girl did was very sweet and kind and is great!

Well now a days 99.9% of the kids are IN SCHOOL and go trick or treating.. And if I were a kid that had to watch kids eating candy in school the monday after halloween, and listening to how much fun they had.. Id be miserable. So ya…….. its 2009. Not 1960

They do not need it in a sense that they will die without it but kids do need the chance to be kids. I think getting the chance to participate in child activities when your young helps you be a better well rounded adult and enjoy life more. You have plenty of time to be stuffy and boring and have responsibilities when you are grown and 18. Childhood is such a small fraction of our lives and is over so soon and it is not something you can decide to redo later in life. And i understand my mom always made my costumes when I was young instead of buying them but she can’t now with my little sister. She is no longer a stay at home wife and mom so she has no time. Now she works 40+ hrs a week. The moral of the stories is let kids be kids they grow up too fast anyway.

Interesting story. Do you have a link where I could read more about it? I agree that it seems a little silly to have a costume charity since costumes can be made with anything.

I’m not sure I agree with halloween not being as safe as it used to be. It sounds like you might be buying into the myths of poisoned razer blade candy. You might want to look into that and see how those myths got started.

"It was a local news story."

So what was the story? Does the local news station have a website I could see?

"My little friends and I did not have to worry about getting raped or kidnapped or killed when we did go out for Halloween. Today kids do. The sickos are out there in record numbers."

Kids shouldn’t go out alone. They should always have adult supervison, but’s what the record number of sickos? Two?

"And what about kids parents who do not believe in Halloween and ghost and goblins? Should they have to change just because others believe in it?"

Of course people who don’t like halloween shouldn’t have to celebrate it, but kids shouldn’t be denied one of the best parts of being a kid because of overblown media hype.
