I need some ideas for cheap halloween costumes!!?
I have 2 daughters ages 11yrs and 9 yrs old. This year we are money is really tight (as Ive heard from most everyone). I refuse to buy a costume from Wal-mart etc. and pay upwards of or more, and they only wear it once, and it rips before the night is even over.
I need some good ideas to make my own costumes for them. I dont want anything really cheap looking, something they wont be embarassed to wear around. Like Ive thought about the classic tablecloth ghost but its to plain. and they have already turned their noses up at the idea lol.
I’d love to have some new websites, esp those with pictures. Any kind that has do-it-yourself costumes or halloween tips.
Thanks for your serious responses!!

A clown, they could just wear miss matched clothes and paint their faces and wear different shoes. Maybe dress up as a boy (since they’re girls), wear a hat and draw a beard and mustache on them.
A great website I found that you can make homemade costumes is:
http://www.robinsfyi.com/holidays/halloween/costumes.htm
They have waaaaaay too many outfits and costumes to name.
Another great site is:

I could only think of a few, but these sites covered way more than I could ever imagine!!
One year I took a sheet and cut holes and it and was a ghost. It looked pretty good.
I think making costumes would be a pretty cool idea. Or you could go to WalMart, or a close Dollar Tree where you live.

This has some really good ideas for homemade costumes. Also, whats wrong with a ghost. Do what this website says and dress the ghost up. Put makeup and jewelry on your child over the sheet. Its also got other fun ideas. Be creative.
well i made my own costume (i am 12). i bought a black and orange witch hat, orange and black striped pantyhose, and black glovettes at CVS for like $10 to $15. then i am just going to wear a black shirt and skirt and glow in the dark make up. IM A WITCH!!!
When I was younger and money was tight I often went as a hobo. Some old clothes, a bag on the end of a stick…
Dip torn (unused) toilet tissue into sugar water and stick it to the face. When it dries it takes on a very disturbing appearance of peeling skin–useful for zombie costumes.
If you have a nearby thrift store, you can often find a lot of very cheap clothes that can be turned into costumes. And if they get ruined in the process, you don’t feel too bad about it. I’ve used such clothes in the past to dress like a nerd (Ok…to look like more of a nerd), a zombie, a vampire (just add teeth), and a hippie.
One of my daughters dressed as a christmas present by using a large box, some wrapping paper and a bow. Just cut out some holes for arms, legs, and head.
you can make quite effective costumes out of clothes you already own and just make it more halloweeny with hats or accessories. if you have some black skirts and t-shirts you can buy a witches hat really cheaply and make a wand out of tinfoil and sticks. the white sheet is a classic, but can make a whole new ghost outfit by wearing white/pale blue clothes in an oldish style (or a nightdress or something) and then getting some facepaints to finish it all off. you could buy some new clothes that will work for this but also be suitable for everyday use so you don’t waste money.
You can do a rag doll. My friend did that one year. Or you can just get a thing of cheap face paint. Usually the little kits come with a mini book of how to apply the makeup and they can be used on both of them.
Here’s some websites that offer homemade costumes:
